Cat Names

Whether you brought home a tiny ball of fuzz from the pet store or an older cat from the shelter, you are quickly going to come to the realization that your kitty needs a name. Cat names can be as varied as the cats that own them and the people that bestow them.

When choosing from the variety of cat names that are out there, you can take several things into consideration. Is your cat young or old? Is it a boy or a girl? Does it have any distinguishing markings or personality traits? Names for cats can also come from literature, the movies, or TV.

Kitten names can be cutesy and fun. Names for kittens often take into account their looks or their lively personalities. Thus you end up with a lot of kittens with the name Coco, Fuzzy, or Boots. Cute kitten names can also come from nicknames like Pookie and Snookums. When children are involved, cat names for kittens can get quite creative, and you may end up with a feline named after the latest character on Sesame Street or with a nonsensical name like Princess Fuzzy butt Jellybean. When choosing a name for a kitten, keep in mind that all kittens will eventually become cats, and calling Sponge Bob to dinner every night may get a little tiring after your kids have long since grown and left the house.

You can choose cat names based on gender alone if you like. Female cat names are often pretty-sounding. You can get girl cat names from flowers, like Lily or Pansy, from foreign languages, or even use “human” names such as Ally, Megs, or Susie. Male cat names are often similar – you can choose a macho name like Tiger or Bagheera, a name from a foreign language, or go with a “human” name like Max or Sam.
Black cat names run the gambit from smoky and charcoal to onyx and jet. Or you could get creative and name your black cat the exact opposite – like Whitey or Ghost.

If you do not want to have the third Coco on the block, you can consider some more unique cat names. Consider naming your cat based on where he was found. If your cat is a boy, unique male cat names might include Freeway or Chevrolet if he was found near the street. A girl cat might be called Miami or California after your favorite vacation spot. More unusual cat names can come from things that are totally unrelated to cats – such as calling your cat Dog, or naming her after your favorite beverage.

If you want some ideas for cool cat names, you can look to the celebrities. Mark Twain called his cat Apollinaris, Ronald Reagan had a Cleo, Whitney Houston a Marilyn Miste, and Martha Stewart had a Vivaldi.

You can get a cat name from almost anywhere, so take your time and choose one you like. The hard part will be getting your cat to answer to it.
